The issuer's name 'Klostergutsverwaltung Ettal' is set in Gothic blackletter at the head, repeated as a lighter red underprint beneath, while the central text reads 'Gutschein über fünf Pfennige' in large blackletter type flanked by the numeral '5' on each side. A redemption clause in smaller script below gives validity through 31 December 1917, followed by the issuing authority designation, a manuscript signature, and the printer's imprint 'J. P. Klostergutsverwaltung Ettal — the estate administration of Ettal Abbey — issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany from 1916 onward, as metal coinage disappeared into wartime hoarding and industrial use. Institutional issuers of this kind, monasteries and agricultural estates among them, were permitted to circulate low-denomination Notgeld to keep local transactions functioning.
J. P. Himmer of Augsburg, a long-established regional printer, handled a significant volume of Bavarian Notgeld commissions during this period — competent work, nothing elaborate.
