Kehl sits directly across the Rhine from Strasbourg, and its notgeld issues reflect that border instability acutely. Following Germany's defeat in 1918, the occupied Rhineland suffered acute small-change shortages as French-administered Alsace absorbed Strasbourg and severed normal commercial ties with the German bank across the river.
