| Obverse description | The obverse features a raised pearl border along the rim enclosing an inner raised pearl circle, forming an annular legend zone. The circular legend reads 'STADTGEMEINDE' above and 'KEHL A. RH' below, separated by two small rosette ornaments at the sides. At center, within the pearl circle, the large numeral '5' denoting the denomination is prominently displayed in relief against the flat field. |

Kehl sits directly across the Rhine from Strasbourg, and its notgeld issues reflect that border instability acutely. Following Germany's defeat in 1918, the occupied Rhineland suffered acute small-change shortages as French-administered Alsace absorbed Strasbourg and severed normal commercial ties with the German bank across the river. Municipal zinc pieces like this one filled the gap left by withdrawn imperial coinage, circulating locally when trust in centralized monetary supply had effectively collapsed.
