Ichenhausen is a small Swabian town that would have had no business striking its own coinage under normal circumstances. By 1917, the wartime drain on copper and nickel had forced hundreds of German municipalities — most of them equally obscure — to issue zinc or iron notgeld simply to keep small transactions functioning. The imperial government had sanctioned the practice out of necessity, not design.
The two Funck varieties suggest at least one die revision during the issue's production run, a detail worth tracking for type collectors.
