Obverse description The denomination numeral '5' dominates the central field in large raised figures, with the word 'PFENNIG' inscribed below it and the date '1918' at the bottom. A circular legend reading 'KRIEGSNOTGELD OBERAMT GÖPPINGEN' surrounds the design along the entire periphery. The lettering is rendered in plain serif capitals consistent with wartime emergency coinage production.

Additional information

Göppingen's Oberamt issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial war economy stripped copper and nickel from civilian coinage entirely. District-level authorities across Württemberg scrambled to fill the small-denomination gap themselves, producing locally sanctioned substitutes that varied wildly in material quality and striking consistency. Zinc was the unsentimental default — abundant, workable, and considered expendable.

The Funck reference places this among the better-documented Württemberg district issues, but survival in undamaged condition is complicated by zinc's notorious susceptibility to oxidation and post-strike corrosion.
