The Bremer Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft was founded in 1877 to manage Bremen's expanding free-port warehouse infrastructure, and like many large industrial employers of the Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, it issued its own token currency for use within its facilities — a common workaround when small-denomination coinage was either scarce or impractical to handle in bulk payroll and canteen transactions. Iron was the default material for such issues during and after the First World War, when copper and nickel were requisitioned for the war effort and never fully returned to small-change production.
