Soest's municipal authority issued this note as part of the Kleingeldersatz wave that swept German towns in 1920, when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply worn out of existence by wartime disruption and postwar shortages. The Magistrat was one of hundreds of local bodies legally empowered to fill that gap with emergency paper.
Edler & Krische in Hannover handled a large volume of this municipal notgeld work, and the firm's output varied considerably in print quality across clients. The S81.1c designation within the DeNG catalogue indicates a variant within the Soest 5 Pfennig series — collectors should check serial numbering and any typographic differences against the other listed variants before cataloguing.
