Traunstein's 1920 Notgeld issue belongs to the second major wave of German municipal emergency money, by which point hundreds of towns had normalized the practice of printing their own small-denomination paper. The Stadt Traunstein series was a direct response to the chronic shortage of low-denomination coins — a problem rooted in metal hoarding and Reichsbank supply failures that had persisted since the war years.
Small Bavarian municipal Notgeld from this period was typically printed in short runs by local printers and redeemed quickly, which paradoxically made survivors more common than their fragility suggests — many were kept as novelties from the start.
