Obverse description Central device features the Honduran coat of arms, comprising a triangular cartouche enclosing a volcanic landscape with a rising sun, flanked by twin towers issuing from the sea, surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon bearing a small cross at the base. The entire device is surmounted by a mural crown. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE HONDURAS arcs around the upper portion of the arms, with the date 1871 appearing in the lower field within the central cartouche. The design is rendered in a bold, slightly provincial style consistent with mid-nineteenth-century Central American coinage.
