The entire device is surmounted by a mural crown. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE HONDURAS arcs around the upper portion of the arms, with the date 1871 appearing in the lower field within the central cartouche. The design is rendered in a bold, slightly provincial style consistent with mid-nineteenth-century Central American coinage.
