Weight and fineness inscriptions reading 12 G. and AG 0.999 appear at the left and right sides of the field respectively, while the face value 5 PESOS is inscribed below the arms. Cuba's International Year of Peace coinage in 1986 was part of a broader push by the Castro government to position the island as a voice for non-aligned nations and Third World solidarity during the Reagan era. Trial strikes — known in Cuban numismatic circles under the JMA reference system — were produced in alternative compositions to test die performance and striking pressure before finalizing production specifications. This brass example almost certainly precedes a silver or other precious-metal issue, brass being the standard trial medium at the Casa de la Moneda's contracted minting facilities during this period.
