Cuba's volanta series was part of a broader hard-currency export program the Castro government ran through the 1980s, producing collector coins sold internationally for foreign exchange while domestic Cubans had no legal access to them. The volanta itself — a two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage — was the defining vehicle of 19th-century Havana aristocracy, operated by a postilion rider rather than a coachman, a configuration unique to the island.
