Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the center of the obverse, depicting a shield quartered with a golden key between two landmasses in the upper section, a rising sun with rays over distant mountains in the upper field, and a royal palm tree against diagonal blue and white stripes in the lower section. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap adorned with a five-pointed star, and flanked by an oak branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right, both tied at the base. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DE CUBA' arcs along the upper periphery, while '16 G.' appears to the lower left, '5 PESOS' at the bottom, and 'AG 0.999' to the lower right, all within a plain, polished field.
