Cuba's 1987 hard-currency commemorative program was designed explicitly for export — these pieces were sold through international numismatic channels to generate foreign exchange, never intended for domestic circulation at a time when the peso had no convertibility outside the island. The "Charity Church" referenced is the Iglesia de la Caridad in Havana, a colonial-era structure with strong popular devotion attached to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Cuba's patron saint.
