Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a key between two promontories beneath a rising sun, a royal palm tree in the central pale, and fasces to the left. The country name REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs as a curved legend along the upper periphery. The coin's weight and fineness designations flank the shield on either side within the field, and the face value 5 PESOS appears as a straight legend below the arms.

DE LA CARIDAD DEL COBRE, arcs as a curved legend along the lower periphery, followed by the year of the basilica's founding, 1827, set off by a bullet point.

Additional information

Cuba's 1987 hard-currency commemorative program was designed explicitly for export — these pieces were sold through international numismatic channels to generate foreign exchange, never intended for domestic circulation at a time when the peso had no convertibility outside the island. The "Charity Church" referenced is the Iglesia de la Caridad in Havana, a colonial-era structure with strong popular devotion attached to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Cuba's patron saint.

The JMA reference prefix AAEE places this squarely within Cuba's official export emission series tracked by José M. Aranaz.
