The "Souvenir Peso" being commemorated here was Cuba's first tourist-oriented coin program, launched in 1897 by the provisional government in anticipation of independence from Spain. That original peso was never intended as circulating currency — it was struck specifically for sale to American visitors and sympathizers following the Cuban struggle for independence. By the time Cuba issued this 1987 commemorative marking the 90th anniversary, the irony of a revolutionary socialist state honoring a coin designed to attract American dollars was apparently unremarked upon officially.
