| Beschrijving keerzijde | The central device depicts a portrait bust of Leonor Molina allegorically representing the Republic of Cuba, notable as the first effigy to appear on a Cuban coin. The commemorative legend PATRIA Y LIBERTAD arcs along the upper periphery. The dates 1897 and 1987 flank the portrait, with EMISIÓN ORIGINAL inscribed to the left and the mintmark with the current issue date to the right. The word SOUVENIR appears in the lower field below the bust, and a beaded inner border follows the contour of the rim. |

The "Souvenir Peso" being commemorated here was Cuba's first tourist-oriented coin program, launched in 1897 by the provisional government in anticipation of independence from Spain. That original peso was never intended as circulating currency — it was struck specifically for sale to American visitors and sympathizers following the Cuban struggle for independence. By the time Cuba issued this 1987 commemorative marking the 90th anniversary, the irony of a revolutionary socialist state honoring a coin designed to attract American dollars was apparently unremarked upon officially.
