Colombia's Banco de la República introduced this small-denomination aluminium bronze piece during a period when the country's monetary system was under sustained pressure from inflation running well above 20% annually. The 5 peso denomination had effectively lost most of its purchasing power by the time this series ended in 1993, and the coin was rendered obsolete by the currency reforms that followed — Colombia redenominated in 1993, replacing the old peso with a new structure that rendered sub-100 denominations essentially pointless for circulation.
