| Opmerkingen |
Guiuan is a coastal municipality on the southeastern tip of Samar — one of the first Philippine landmasses to see significant Japanese occupation activity following the December 1941 invasion. This note is a locally issued guerrilla or municipal emergency currency, produced during the Japanese occupation period when U.S.-backed Philippine Commonwealth currency was hoarded or unavailable and Japanese Military Pesos were widely distrusted or refused in rural communities.
Municipal emergency notes from Samar are among the less-documented issues of the Philippine occupation series. Guiuan's geographic isolation made resupply difficult, which almost certainly drove the decision to print locally.
