Obverse description The obverse carries a central vignette of President Manuel Quezon at left, within an ornate guilloche border. The main legend reads 'THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE PHILIPPINES / WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND / FIVE PESOS', with additional text identifying this as an 'EMERGENCY CIRCULATING NOTE OF 1942 / ISSUED BY AUTHORITY OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES ON JANUARY 20, 1942'.
