Banco Nacional was one of several private banks of issue operating in Colombia during the 1880s under a system of free banking that the government would eventually abolish in 1886 when it established a state monopoly. This note predates that consolidation by just a few years and belongs to a short window when competing private institutions were still authorized to place their own paper into circulation.

ABNC's Colombian commissions from this period are well-documented. The company maintained a long relationship with Colombian banking clients throughout the late nineteenth century, producing notes for multiple institutions simultaneously — sometimes sharing plate elements across different issuers.
