The Banco de Buenos Ayres was Argentina's first formal banking institution, established by the provincial government of Buenos Aires in 1822 under the financial stewardship of Bernardino Rivadavia. Its notes were issued against a mixed reserve of specie and government bonds — a structure that quickly proved fragile. By 1826, the bank was absorbed into the newly created Banco Nacional, and its earlier notes were progressively withdrawn.
Printing in Buenos Aires at this date meant limited technical resources. These early issues lack the fine intaglio work of contemporary European-printed South American notes, and paper quality was inconsistent across the run — something collectors encounter directly when handling surviving examples.
