The Argentino gold series was authorized under the Ley de Moneda of November 1881, Argentina's first unified national coinage law, which abolished the chaotic patchwork of provincial currencies that had circulated since independence. The Casa de Moneda de Buenos Aires struck the bulk of the issue, though Philadelphia and later Paris produced portions of the series when domestic capacity fell short.

By 1890, the Baring Crisis had collapsed Argentina's credit and suspended convertibility entirely. Coins of this type vanished from circulation almost immediately — hoarded, exported as bullion payments to European creditors, or simply never spent.
