Spain's Civil War created a fragmented monetary system in which Republican and Nationalist zones each issued their own currency, with neither side fully recognizing the other's paper. This note was issued by the Republican government's Banco de España during one of the conflict's most difficult years for the Loyalist side, when the fall of the northern industrial zones had already shifted the war's momentum decisively against the Republic.
The "replica" designation in modern catalogs reflects post-war Francoist legal doctrine, which retroactively declared Republican-issued currency null and void — effectively rebranding legitimate wartime issues as illegitimate copies of the pre-war national series. The FNMT had printed pre-war Banco de España notes from the same Madrid facility.
