| Descrizione del dritto | Bare-headed youthful effigy of King Alfonso XII facing left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair swept back from the brow. The engraver's initials 'G.S.' appear discreetly on the truncation of the bust. The circular legend reads 'ALFONSO XII REY DE ESPAÑA' disposed around the upper and lateral fields, with the date '1875' flanked by two small six-pointed stars positioned along the lower exergual border. The coin is framed by a continuous beaded border. |

Alfonso XII returned to Spain in January 1875 following the Bourbon Restoration engineered by General Martínez Campos, ending three years of republican chaos and the disastrous Cantonal uprisings. The mint moved quickly to produce a proper national coinage under the restored monarchy, and this 5 Pesetas type — carrying the young king's first official portrait — was the immediate result. The milled edge legend was a deliberate anti-counterfeiting measure inherited from the Peseta system introduced under Amadeo I in 1869.
Dies for this short-lived first portrait type were replaced by 1878 with a revised effigy.
