The Banco Nacional Ultramarino had held exclusive note-issuing rights in Macau since 1902, and this 5 Patacas represents one of the earliest denominations printed under that monopoly arrangement. Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. were the dominant choice for colonial currency work at this period — their intaglio security printing was considered harder to counterfeit in territories where banking infrastructure was thin and forgery detection unreliable.
The pataca itself was pegged to the Mexican silver dollar, a de facto standard across much of southern China's trade network at the time.
