The 5 Para denomination was introduced into Ottoman provincial coinage as part of broader currency reforms under Mahmud I, whose reign from 1730 began immediately after the Patrona Halil rebellion violently deposed his predecessor Ahmed III. That uprising — led by an Albanian janissary and a Greek merchant — forced significant administrative reorganization across the empire's Arab provinces, Baghdad among them. Provincial minting at Baghdad served practical logistical needs in a region chronically underserved by coin supply from the Istanbul mints.
