Birendra's coronation in February 1975 — delayed nearly four years after his father Mahendra's death in January 1972 — was one of the most elaborately staged events in modern Nepali history, timed to align with an auspicious date on the Hindu calendar. This piece was struck in 1974 in anticipation of that ceremony, part of a broader commemorative coin program issued across multiple denominations for the occasion.
The copper-nickel composition distinguishes it from the aluminum 5 paisa issues of the same period.
