The 5 Mun Tong was issued as part of Joseon's abortive currency modernization under King Gojong, an attempt to address chronic cash shortages that had plagued the kingdom for decades. The reform collapsed almost immediately — rampant overproduction triggered sharp inflation, and the new coins were withdrawn from circulation within roughly a year of introduction.
KM#763 is tied to the Jeonnhwanguk mint, established specifically for this modernization effort with machinery acquired through newly opened trade channels. The whole program lasted barely long enough to leave a meaningful circulating supply.
