| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo) occupies the cardinal positions: 常 (Sang) above, 平 (Pyong) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bo) to the left. The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) in relief against a flat, unadorned field. The outer rim is plain and slightly raised, consistent with the traditional Korean cast cash coin format of the Joseon dynasty. |
