| 正面描述 | Central square hole flanked by the four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation: 常 (Sang) above, 平 (Pyeong) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bo) to the left, reading top-bottom and right-left respectively. The inscription identifies the coin as currency of the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) Treasury, the principal monetary authority of the Joseon Dynasty. Characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in raised relief against a plain field. The overall design follows the conventional East Asian cash coin format with minimal ornamentation. |
