| Popis líce | Central square hole flanked by the four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation: 常 (Sang) above, 平 (Pyeong) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bo) to the left, reading top-bottom and right-left respectively. The inscription identifies the coin as currency of the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) Treasury, the principal monetary authority of the Joseon Dynasty. Characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in raised relief against a plain field. The overall design follows the conventional East Asian cash coin format with minimal ornamentation. |

The 5 Mun issues of 1883 were produced under the Joseon court's fitful attempts at monetary modernization, a process driven partly by pressure from Japanese commercial interests who found the older mun coinage inconvenient for trade settlement. The "Curved Sim" variety refers to the calligraphic form of the 心 character in the mint designation — a distinction that matters to specialists because multiple furnaces struck this type simultaneously, with subtle die differences tracing output to specific casting facilities.
Within two years, the entire mun series was effectively abandoned as Korea moved toward a decimal currency structure. These pieces circulated briefly and hard.
