Brazil's Thesouro Nacional placed repeated orders with the American Bank Note Company throughout the early republic period, and the "13th Print" designation reflects the cumulative numbering system used to track successive print runs of this ongoing series — not a single print year. By 1908, the milréis was under sustained pressure from Brazil's chronic deficit spending and the lingering effects of the Encilhamento financial collapse of the early 1890s, which had flooded the country with paper and destroyed confidence in government-issued notes for nearly a generation.
