Estonia's marka series was already troubled by the time this piece was struck. The marka had been introduced in 1919 to replace the German-occupied territory's ostmark, but chronic instability led to its eventual abolition in 1928, when the kroon was introduced at a fixed rate of 100 marka. The 1924 nickel brass composition for this denomination replaced an earlier cupronickel version — a pragmatic materials substitution that the KM#3a designation distinguishes from its predecessor.
