The central text, in Fraktur blackletter script, contains the redemption notice stating that the voucher will be redeemed from 2 January 1919 at the local branch of the Hannoversche Bank, and must be presented for redemption no later than 1 February 1919. A faint violet stamp impression appears in the lower centre. The red serial number is visible in mirror impression from the obverse at the upper left. |

F. Thörl's Vereinigte Harburger Oelfabriken was one of the largest vegetable oil processing companies in northern Germany, and by 1918 the imperial monetary system had broken down badly enough that a cooking oil manufacturer was printing its own emergency currency. This is Notgeld in the strictest sense — a private industrial firm filling a coin shortage so severe that workers couldn't make change at the factory canteen.
Printed locally by F. C. Bertram in Harburg, this note never circulated beyond the immediate community. Its redemption would have been entirely contingent on the company's goodwill.
