O friede, du mit deinen Seidenschwingen,
Wann spannst du sie von Pol zu Pole aus,
Daß klar ein einzig liebes Engelsingen
Schalmeibegleitet tönt durch's Weltenhaus?

Comments

Altrahlstedt issued this note in 1922 as part of the local Notgeld wave that saw hundreds of German municipalities printing their own emergency small change. The denomination honors the Detlev von Liliencron Gesellschaft — a literary society named after the North German poet and Schleswig-Holstein native Detlev von Liliencron, who died in Alt-Rahlstedt in 1909 and is buried there. Civic pride and cultural commemoration were not unusual motivations for Notgeld design choices, but anchoring a five-mark note to a specific local literary society is distinctly particular.

O. Thämer handled both design and printing — a small local operation rather than one of the major Notgeld printers.
