| Obverse description | Printed in blue on cream paper with a fine chevron guilloche underprint throughout. The left panel bears a vignette of the Erkelenz municipal coat of arms — a walled tower surmounted by a lion passant over a rose — framed by laurel branches and the legend 'Kreis Erkelenz', with a large Gothic numeral '5' below. The central panel carries the issuer heading 'Kreis Erkelenz 1918' in Gothic script, the denomination 'Fünf Mark' in large blackletter, a multi-line redemption clause in German, the place-and-date line 'Erkelenz, den 12. November 1918', the authorising legend 'Der Kreis-Ausschuss des Kreises Erkelenz', and three manuscript signatures below; a red-printed serial number prefixed 'No' appears at the top centre, with the letters M-A-R-K distributed vertically in ornamental cartouches along both side borders and the figure '5' repeated at the corners. |
