Obverse description The Maltese coat of arms occupies the centre of the field, depicting a quartered shield with the George Cross on the dexter side and vertical stripes on the sinister side, surmounted by a mural crown of five towers. The shield is flanked by an elaborate wreath of olive and palm branches, tied at the base, with a scroll beneath bearing the legend REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA. The country name MALTA arcs along the upper legend in large spaced letters, while the date 1998 appears prominently in the lower field.
