Petko Rachov Slaveikov was a 19th-century Bulgarian poet and revolutionary whose work bridged the National Revival period and the post-Liberation literary scene. This coin was issued the year before the centenary of Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule — the 1878 Treaty of San Stefano being the obvious political backdrop for the BNB's commemorative program in this period.
