Íslands Banki was a Danish-controlled private institution, and its notes circulated under conditions that frustrated Icelandic economic interests for decades — the bank held a monopoly on note issue that Icelanders repeatedly challenged before finally establishing a state bank in 1927. This note belongs to the earliest years of that monopoly, issued when Denmark still governed Iceland and the bank's own statutes were shaped more in Copenhagen than Reykjavík.
Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig plant was the dominant supplier of Scandinavian and Nordic colonial currency at the turn of the century. The P#10 series is among the scarcer early Íslands Banki issues, with relatively few examples known to survive in any condition.
