Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani operated a closed-economy settlement at Longyearbyen on Svalbard, and these notes functioned as company scrip — valid only within the mining community itself. Norwegian law technically applied to Svalbard under the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty, but the remoteness of the archipelago and the company's total dominance of local commerce made conventional banking infrastructure irrelevant. Scrip was the practical solution.
The 1938–1942 date range is significant. German forces occupied mainland Norway from April 1940, but Longyearbyen was evacuated by the British and Norwegians in 1941, the settlement partly demolished to deny its resources to the enemy. Notes issued in the final years of this range may have seen almost no meaningful circulation before the evacuation rendered them worthless on-site.
