A large watermark-style numeral '5 Kr.' occupies the centre field as a pale underprint, overlaid with the full bearer clause in small Gothic text and the denomination '5 – Fem kroner' within a decorative cartouche. Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani was a coal mining operation on Svalbard, and like most isolated Arctic company towns, it ran on its own scrip rather than Norwegian krone — not by legal design but by geographic necessity. The nearest bank was hundreds of miles away across open water. Workers were paid in company currency, redeemable only at the company store, a system that kept wages circulating within the settlement rather than leaving with the men on supply ships.
Johan Anker was the company's managing director during much of this period. The countersignature by the "Kontorchef Spitsbergen" — the chief clerk on-site — reflects a dual authorization structure, one signatory in Oslo, one at the mine itself.
