Kenyérmező was one of dozens of Austro-Hungarian prisoner of war camps that issued their own internal scrip during the First World War, cutting off inmates from the civilian money supply and creating a closed economy within the wire. These camp currencies were a deliberate control mechanism — if prisoners couldn't spend Austrian crowns outside, the incentive to bribe guards or fund escapes was theoretically reduced.
Campbell 1391 is among the scarcer Hungarian camp issues. Few were preserved by the prisoners who used them, and the camps themselves kept no meaningful archival records of print runs.
