Ulm remained a Free Imperial City until Napoleon dissolved the Holy Roman Empire's free city structure in 1802, handing it to Bavaria — then to Württemberg in 1810. This 1767 issue predates that dissolution by 35 years, struck when the city still exercised its independent minting rights under imperial authority.
