Papua New Guinea's kina was introduced in 1975 when the country decoupled from the Australian dollar at independence. The Bank of Papua New Guinea managed the transition carefully, and the P#6 series ran across nearly a decade with two distinct signature combinations marking a change in finance ministry leadership — Morauta was replaced by Vulupindi for the 1988 issues, making that the short-run variant of the series.

Note Printing Australia's involvement reflects the close institutional ties carried over from the colonial period; the Reserve Bank of Australia had effectively administered PNG's currency infrastructure before independence.
