Petrykivka decorative painting was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013, directly prompting a wave of Ukrainian commemorative issues celebrating folk art traditions. This coin followed within three years of that designation. The village of Petrykivka, in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, has maintained the tradition continuously since at least the early 19th century, when whitewashed cottage walls served as the primary canvas.
The nickel brass composition — sometimes catalogued under the German silver designation despite containing no silver — was standard for Ukrainian commemorative circulation issues of this period.
