Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse features a centrally placed bandura — a traditional Ukrainian plucked string instrument — rendered in stylized relief and framed by an elaborate Baroque ornamental border. The design incorporates conventionalized decorative elements evoking the Cossack manuscript tradition. The inscription БАНДУРА appears within the composition, its letterforms deliberately styled to resemble historical Cossack script, integrating text and imagery into a unified decorative whole. The overall artistic treatment reflects Ukrainian folk and Baroque aesthetic influences, with the instrument depicted in a frontal, symmetrical arrangement within the coin's field.

Aanvullende informatie

The bandura — a Ukrainian plucked string instrument with anywhere from 55 to 68 strings on modern variants — became a charged political symbol during the Soviet period, when bands of itinerant blind bandura players, known as kobzari, were systematically targeted and killed during the 1930s Stalinist repressions. Honoring the instrument on circulating coinage in 2003 carried deliberate cultural weight, situating it firmly in post-independence Ukrainian identity politics.
