| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is set within an elaborate letterpress border of interlocking guilloche scrollwork, with the denomination numeral '5' repeated in the four corners. The central text panel, printed in Dutch, bears the issuer's name 'DE SURINAAMSCHE BANK' at the top, followed by the payable clause 'te Paramaribo betaalt aan toonder' and the denomination 'Vijf Gulden' in ornate Gothic script, with a note of exchange hours below. Two manuscript signatures appear at the lower left and right, identified by the titles 'Directeur' and 'Directeur-Voorzitter', with a printed date and the printer's imprint 'Uitgev. bij Joh. Enschedé & Zonen' at the foot. |

De Surinaamsche Bank was a private institution with a note-issuing monopoly in Dutch Suriname, a status it held continuously from 1865 until well into the twentieth century. Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, the Haarlem security printer with centuries of continuous operation behind it, handled the bank's notes throughout this period — a relationship that gave the series a consistency of quality unusual for a colonial territory of Suriname's modest economic weight.
The fourteen-year date range on P#71 reflects reissue across multiple print runs rather than a single production. Notes from the early 1920s entered circulation during a period of post-war commodity volatility in Suriname, when bauxite was beginning to displace plantation agriculture as the colony's primary economic driver.
