Paraguay's postwar monetary reform culminated in the creation of the guaraní in 1943, replacing the peso at a rate of 100 to 1. By 1963, the Banco Central was still working through a series of denominations printed by De La Rue as the country stabilized after decades of inflationary turbulence following the Chaco War. The 5 guaraníes occupied the low end of daily transactions — a denomination that circulated hard and wore quickly.
De La Rue's watermark security on this issue is relatively simple by the firm's standards, reflecting the modest denomination and the cost economics of producing notes for a small South American republic at the time.
