The Banque Nationale de la République d'Haïti series printed by ABNCo in the early 1970s coincided with the consolidation of Jean-Claude Duvalier's government following his father's death in 1971. Currency design under both Duvaliers was tightly controlled — the notes functioned as instruments of state image-making as much as anything else. ABNCo had handled Haitian printing contracts for decades by this point, a relationship stretching back well into the mid-twentieth century.
The P#212 series is not scarce, but circulated examples show heavy soiling along fold lines — the gourde's low purchasing power meant small denominations passed through many hands quickly.
